Interlibrary Loan and ConnectNY for Honors Students

Interlibrary Loan:

The Standish Library Interlibrary Loan Department will request copies of articles and loans of books or other materials from other libraries for your use.  Interlibrary loan requests are submitted through ILLiad (Siena’s interlibrary loan electronic request/delivery system).  If you do not already have an ILLiad account, please go to the library homepage, follow the ILLiad link, and create one.  Contact a reference librarian (518-783-2988) or Interlibrary Loan (518-783-2518 / sienalibrary@siena.edu ) if you have any questions about how to submit a request.

Book requests take approximately 4-10 days to fill. Articles are usually received within 1-3 days.   ILL pays a borrowing fee of up to $50 per item, but you will be notified if something you've requested is too expensive to get.

Honors students are granted extended loan periods for Siena materials, but the Standish Library cannot permit extended loan periods for material borrowed through interlibrary loan.  Generally ILL materials have a 4-week loan period, with only one renewal, so the maximum you'll have with an item is 8 weeks.  Since the loan period of any given item is determined by the lending library, not Siena, you may have even less time.  Moreover, an item received via interlibrary loan is subject to recall by the lending library at any time, if one of its own patrons needs it.  We must respect other institutions’ due dates and lending policies, or they won't lend to us in the future, so please plan accordingly and return ILL materials on time.

ConnectNY:

Siena participates in the ConnectNY library consortium, which includes Adelphi, Bard, Canisius, Cazenovia, Colgate, Hamilton, Hobart & William Smith, Le Moyne, Medaille,  Pace,  Renesslaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), St. Lawrence, Skidmore, Union, United States Military Academy, and Vassar.  Students can request books through ConnectNY online via CYRIL or the ConnectNY union catalog or may check out books in person at any one of the participating institutions.  You can monitor your ConnectNY requests (status, due dates, etc.) via the "My library account" link on CYRIL's main screen.

Books ordered through ConnectNY usually arrive within 3-5 days.  ConnectNY items are lent for 42 days.  Only one additional 42-day renewal may be requested, provided other users have not reserved the item or it has not been recalled by the lending library.  The Standish Library cannot permit extended loan periods for material borrowed through ConnectNY, so please plan accordingly and return ConnectNY materials on time.

Borrowers will be billed for overdue ConnectNY items 30 days after loan expiration.  A $100 fine or replacement cost will be imposed for each lost/unreturned book.  Should the book be eventually returned, all but $10 of the fee will be credited to the patron’s account.

Tips for honors students using ILL or ConnectNY:

• Plan ahead.
• Don't order everything at once.  Order no more than you will be able to get through in the 6 to 8 weeks you will have.
• If a book is due and you still aren't finished with it, contact us!  We usually can order another copy elsewhere.
• Don't ignore overdue and fine notices.  They won't go away and the lending library will be less inclined to work with us if you leave it too long or have other overdue materials.
