On March 25 the College announced the honorary degree recipient for this year’s Commencement, Dr. James McDonald ‘86. He will also deliver this year’s commencement address. Dr. McDonald currently serves as the Commissioner of Health for New York State.

An honorary degree is the highest honor Siena can bestow on an individual and we are proud to recognize Dr. McDonald with this distinction in recognition of his sustained commitment to the vision and values of St. Francis of Assisi, which has been exemplified through his distinguished career in the healthcare industry.

Before becoming the Commissioner of Health for New York State Dr. McDonald worked for the Rhode Island Department of Health since 2012. At the Rhode Island Department of Health, he served in multiple roles including, Interim Director of Health, Chief Administrative Officer of the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline, and Medical Director for the COVID unit.

We are excited to honor Dr. MacDonald and the Class of 2024 at our Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 12.
