Safety and Service Top of Mind

Siena College’s academic quad was filled with smoke during the annual Campus Safety day as the college sponsored several fire-safety drills, including hands-on fire extinguisher training and displays by the Shaker Road Loudonville Fire Department and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.The main event of the day was a live fire of a mock residence hall room. It showed students how quickly one of their rooms can go up in flames.

Club Fair 2012

Siena’s academic quad was buzzing with students Friday afternoon as the college held its annual Student Senate Club Fair. More than 70 clubs and organizations attended the event and set up stations for students to learn more about the clubs, organizations and programs offered on campus.

NEH Awards College $175,000 Grant

Siena College’s Center for Revolutionary Era Studies (CRES) has been awarded a grant in the amount of $175,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support Landmarks of American History and Culture: Workshops for School Teachers. This is the second NEH grant since 2010 that CRES has received.

The summer mentoring program is celebrating its 45th year. It started with only 10 children and has grown to more than 85 this summer.

Civic Engagement Camp Goes to City Hall

On Wednesday morning, 12 local high school students in Siena’s second annual Civic Engagement Camp sat around a City Hall conference room table with Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings to discuss the initiatives he is taking on a variety of topics including community building, education, sustainability and the relationship between for-profits and nonprofits.

Legally Blind Student Wins Scholarship

Mia Bango hasn’t let her poor eyesight limit her. In fact, sometimes it pushes her to prove she’s no different than anyone else. Last week she was honored with the Ruth Walsh Smith Scholarship, awarded by the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany to a legally blind woman pursuing higher education or career training.

The Viper Radio Telescope, used to view cosmic background radiation in Antarctica was shipped to campus this summer. Allan Weatherwax, Ph.D., dean of the School of Science and long-time Antarctica researcher, made this possible.

Life in the Labs

While many Siena students are enjoying time off from their studies this summer, a handful of students can still be found in Morrell Science Center and Roger Bacon Hall. These students are part of the Siena Summer Scholars Program, which allows faculty members and students to collaborate, design and carry out original research projects.
