Franciscan Perspectives Across Borders

The Office of International Programs hosted a week-long conference titled “Perspectives from Brazil: Student Responses to the Challenges of the Millennium.” Siena students and faculty, as well as representatives from groups in the Capital Region, were joined by 15 students and faculty from FAE Centro Universitario, a Franciscan university in Curitiba, Brazil.

Five Siena Teams Receive APR Awards

Siena College’s men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s golf programs earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top 10 percent of their respective sports across the membership. It’s the second straight year all five programs were recognized.

Franciscan Friars Support Sisters

The leaders of the seven entities of Franciscan Friars (O.F.M.) in the Unites States, representing more than 1250 religious men, have released a letter expressing support for women religious and for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR). This statement comes in response to an ongoing inquiry by the Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith concerning certain past practices of the LCWR, which represents 80% of the women religious in the United States.

Siena’s sons and daughters returned to campus June 1-3 for Alumni Reunion 2012, traveling from as far away as Arizona and California. More than 700 alumni, family and friends returned home to reconnect, see what’s new on campus and celebrate their class anniversaries.

Academic Celebration

The College’s Academic Celebration was held at the end of the spring semester to give students from Siena’s schools of liberal arts, business and science the opportunity to share their research with the campus community. The Maloney Great Room was filled with posters, papers and conference presentations as dozens of students discussed their hard work.

First-Year Students Share Research

As part of this year’s Academic Celebration, nominated first-year students shared their research and defended their findings during Siena's First-Year Seminar Student Conference. More than 30 students gave presentations on a variety of topics including social media influence, genetic modification and domestic violence issues.

Tonko Talks Loan Interest Rates

Siena College welcomed 21st Congressional District Representative Paul Tonko to campus today to discuss the importance of passing legislation that would stop the pending increase of interest rates on need-based federal student loans from 3.4% to 6.8%. President Fr. Kevin Mullen ’75, O.F.M., Ph.D., faculty, administrators and students sat down with Congressman Tonko for a private meeting to discuss the issues and challenges facing students who will incur increasing student loan debt upon graduation.
