Academics, Research/Grant Activity, Siena in the News

By the time Kevin Napier '18 completed his first year at Siena, he was published: an image he created with Assistant Professor of Physics John Moustakas, Ph.D. was featured on the cover of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory.

Napier and Moustakas teamed up as part of the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity's Summer Scholars program.

"I chose to do outside research and academic projects for multiple reasons. I wanted to make sure that I enjoy the field that I intend to enter. Additionally, I thought that it would be a great opportunity to learn how science is really done," said Napier. He also said it's been a great opportunity to build a stronger personal and professional relationship with Dr. Moustakas and learn from his expertise.

Moustakas has been participating in the Summer Scholars program for three years because he believes giving students the opportunity to engage in hands-on research with faculty allows them to look at what they are learning in the classroom in an entirely different way.

"It is exciting and very gratifying to see students challenge themselves by leveraging their knowledge and skills to help solve the types of real-world, practical problems they encounter during their research experience," said Moustakas.

The experience produced by the Summer Scholars program puts Siena students ahead of their peers. "Providing ample, well-funded research opportunities is one of the key ways Siena College distinguishes itself as a cutting-edge institution of learning," said Moustakas.
