Former Yankees shortstop and Siena honorary degree recipient Derek Jeter visited campus today as part of the Jeter’s Leaders 2015 Social Change Project. The program is the signature initiative of the Turn 2 Foundation.

Siena is this year’s host campus for the bi-annual event. President of the Turn 2 Foundation Sharlee Jeter said the idea to hold the program at Siena began when the College granted Derek Jeter an honorary degree for his work with the foundation in 2012. “We always said that we wanted to bring all of our kids up here. We have a scholarship with the College and thought it would be great to have them on campus at Siena, which is an amazing school,” said Sharlee Jeter.

The Jeter’s Leaders spent the day attending educational seminars and interactive workshops about bullying and cyberbullying in the Sarazen Student Union and then attended a barbecue with Jeter.

"For us the foundation has always been important, giving back to the community. Our family has always preached and learned, if you have a little, give a little; if you have a lot, give a lot," said Derek Jeter.

On Monday, the Jeter’s Leaders did a service project for the Regional Food Bank and on Wednesday, they will tour the Capitol building and New York State Museum.

Jeter’s Leaders is a four-year program that fosters academic achievement, positive behavior, healthy lifestyles, leadership development and social change among high school students in New York and West Michigan, who serve as ambassadors for Derek Jeter in their communities.
