American flags across New York state, including the one in front of Siena Hall, are flying at half-staff today in honor of United States Army Major General Harold J. Greene. The Capital Region native died on Tuesday as a result of combat injuries he suffered in Afghanistan. He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to the service of our nation.

Greene was an Army ROTC student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He earned his commission shortly after graduating in 1980. Since then the ROTC units at Siena College, RPI and the University at Albany merged to become the Mohawk Battalion, which is headquartered here at Siena.

Last year, the Mohawk Battalion inducted Major General Greene into its Hall of Fame along with Congressman Chris Gibson ’86 and United States Army Chief of Chaplains Major General Donald Rutherford. Greene’s photo hangs along with the other ROTC Hall of Famers in the Mohawk Battalion offices inside Siena’s Trustco Bank Center.

The thoughts and prayers of the Siena College community are with Major General Greene’s family and friends during this difficult time.
