Creative arts and digital photography students used their talent to raise more than $500 for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. During a two day event called Focus on Sandy, the photography students sold their photos and donated all of the proceeds to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief efforts.
“I’m happy I was able to be part of such an inspiring event,” Angelique Turman Corchado ’15 said. “It’s great that we were able to do something to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.”
Assistant Professor of Studio Art Liz Blum helped the students run the event and stressed how important it was for the Siena community to get involved in the relief effort. Blum said the photography sale made the response come full circle.
“The way we learn of a disaster such as this, and many others that happen throughout the world, is primarily and initially through images,” Blum said. “No matter how hard they are to look at, we witness that event and become part of the reaction.”
Blum said that the sale also validated the work of the digital photography students.
“Photo students were enthusiastic about this effort and I believe felt proud and honored that their work could be viewed and sold, not only as benefiting a cause, but as being seen, placed and appreciated beyond the classroom.”
Other campus groups, including the American Red Cross Club of Siena and the Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy are also raising money to support the relief effort.
