On October 1 Siena College honored Trustee Emeritus George Maloney ’54 with the St. Bernardine of Siena Medal at a Board of Trustees meeting. Maloney has been part of the Siena community for over 65 years, serving on the Board for 16 years.
Siena’s Board of Trustees awards the St. Bernardine of Siena medal to individuals whose accomplishments reflect the traditions of Siena and who contribute significantly to sustaining the traditions of the College. Chairman of the Board, Howard Foote ’74 acknowledged that Maloney had “exceeded every single one of the criteria.”
In addition to being active and involved in service and leadership on the Board, Maloney is recognized as one of the "Builders of Siena" (recognizing lifetime donors of $1 million or more) and is the single, largest donor in the history of the college.
“George continues his lifelong leadership to Siena with his on-going commitment and passion,” said Foote.
Maloney played a large roll in Siena's two most recent comprehensive campaigns: Values and Vision; 1996-2001, as a co-chair, and Siena's current campaign: Living Our Tradition, that, to date, has exceeded its goal ($50 million) and raised over $55 million, with 8 months remaining.
Maloney’s passion for Siena was ignited when he walked the halls in the 1950’s, and has not since been extinguished. His dedication to contributing to the betterment of education stems from his own personal experience in needing a helping hand. A golf scholarship he received during his freshman year enabled him to attend Siena and receive his degree.
“I’ve received a lot of joy in being able to give back. And I thought about that, and I realized it wasn’t pay back. If it was, I would have been finished a long time ago. It was giving back and that really gives into the Franciscan tradition,” said Maloney.
Father Kevin Mullen, O.F.M., Ph.D., former Siena College president and current Provincial Minister of Holy Name Province, believes that the power of example that Maloney has left on the College will never be forgotten.
“There are very few people in the world that will have the record that George Maloney has lived and the legacy that he gives to this college.”
