Siena College graduate and jetBlue Executive Vice President of the People Department Mike Elliott ’87 returned to campus this week to participate in the School of Business Lecture Series.

Elliott is responsible for all matters that shape how jetBlue crewmembers relate to their work, including hiring, professional development, employee relations, compensation, diversity, benefits and corporate social responsibility.

During a speech that was peppered with humor and crowd interaction, the jetBlue executive gave students tips to ensure that the status of their job searches does not remain “up in the air.”

“The things that you experience here make you who you are,” Elliott said as he encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities Siena has to offer and find ways to stand out.

He said jetBlue receives about 100,000 job applications per year, but makes only about 3,000 hires, which proves just how important it is to differentiate from other potential employees.

Along with suggesting that they to do service, find their passions and be open to change, Elliott challenged students to seek opportunities that align with their values.

It’s an approach he has taken since he joined jetBlue in 2010. Since then Elliott has worked hard to inspire a culture of humanity by promoting the airline’s values of safety, caring, integrity, passion and fun.

One of the ways Elliott has lived his company’s values and fostered a positive work environment is to be present for his employees. “The most precious thing you can give to another human being is your time,” Elliott said.

His personal stories and tips for career success resonated with students in the audience.

“Listening to Elliot speak made me understand that Siena offers a diverse experience many employers seek in potential employees whether it be through community service or participating in clubs that don’t relate to my major,” said marketing major Andrew Murphy ’17, adding that those experiences will help him build his personal brand and find his passion.

While he is helping jetBlue become a leader in the airline industry, if they remember Elliott’s suggestions and motivation, his advice may propel Siena student to new heights as well.
