Research/Grant Activity

After ten weeks of intense effort this summer, students in the Research Experience for Undergraduates program presented the fruits of their labors on August 5 in Roger Bacon Hall. Funded by the National Science Foundation, students from several colleges worked together on projects that allowed them to show off their computer science skills.

Jordan Wood ’16 was part of a group that related violent language in rap music to topics such as misogyny and religion.

“I’ve met some great people in this program,” Wood said. “Collaborating together, especially with students from other colleges, was fun.”

Lauren Mathews ’15 analyzed Twitter’s data retrieval system. Her group’s project began in 2011.

“Our work this summer can easily be used to further future research in this area,” Mathews said.

Sharon Small, Ph.D., director of the Siena College Institute for Artificial Intelligence, oversees the program, which is one of only three that are hosted by undergraduate institutions.

“I was pleased that all the teams completed their research projects with great results,” Small said.

She plans to use the lessons learned from this first year of the program to improve it over the next two years, just as her students’ research will continue to build on the progress they made this summer.
