Angelique Turman Corchado ’15 has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Brazil for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research, study and teaching opportunities to over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students.  As an English Teaching Assistant (ETA), Corchado will be placed in a school in Brazil to supplement local English language instruction and provide a native speaker presence in the classroom.

“When I found out I received the Fulbright Scholarship I was in complete shock. I quickly went from shock, to extremely happy, to disbelief in a matter of minutes. I read my acceptance letter about 20 times looking for the catch! It wasn’t until I began the paperwork that it finally set in. Now I’m ecstatic and can’t wait to start my new journey!”

Corchado realized her dream of teaching abroad during her sophomore year at Siena. While studying and volunteering in Ecuador, she met American teachers who introduced her to the possibility of teaching abroad.

“It was then that I had begun thinking about working abroad after graduation. During my semester abroad in Valencia, Spain I completed an internship teaching English at a local primary school. I had so much fun working with students to learn a new language and it felt like the perfect fit for me. I knew then, without a doubt, that I would find a way to continue doing what I loved so much.”

Currently, Corchado is living and working abroad in Spain as a Language and Culture Assistant. There, she teaches children aged 3-9 in the city of Badajoz.  Similarly to what she will be teaching in Brazil, Corchado teaches her students language skills and American culture and tradition.

“From the moment I decided to apply Greg Jabaut and Br. Brian were a constant help and supported me every step of the way. From answering all of my questions to reading my endless drafts and giving me extremely helpful advice. Honestly, without them and the campus committee I wouldn't have stood a chance. I am extremely grateful to them for helping me obtain the experience of a lifetime!”
