Data science and analytics: It’s something every company and every field will be using in the near future – if they aren’t already.

Siena College hosted the panel discussion "Investing in America's Data Science and Analytics Talent - The Case for Action" on October 27, and welcomed area business leaders to campus to hear the following panelists:

  • John M. Carulli Jr., director/DMTS Fab-8 test organization, GlobalFoundries
  • Armand Hensen, managing director, advisory services, Grant Thornton (NJ)
  • Martha Gardner, chief scientist and global quality leader, GE Global Research
  • Michael N. Pappas II, director, data & analytics, KPMG LLP (MI)

What exactly is data science or data analysis?

It’s the process of gathering, inspecting and modeling data to help with productivity, predict future trends, and support decision making. And it’s going to be everywhere.

Carulli told those gathered that use of data science and analytics will be a "force multiplier" for companies going forward.

"The best way for companies to solve problems is through data science, and there needs to be a large pool of talent in a wide range of fields that can do this,” he said. “Companies need Renaissance men and women who know how to access and analyze data and thereby reduce complexities. Business as usual is not going to cut it anymore."

Chester Breary, C.P.A., D.B.A., panel discussant and one of the event’s organizers, explained, “Workplaces demand more sophisticated technology and data analytics skills than ever before. Business leaders must innovate to stay competitive, and they need employees who can gather and analyze large quantities of data to help their organizations adapt and grow.”

The event was presented by Siena’s School of Business.
