When presented with the opportunity to leave his mark on Siena's campus, recent graduate Luke Lavera '15 didn't hesitate. Lavera was approached this past fall about coming back after graduation to paint a mural in the Sarazen Student Union, and he thought it was the perfect way to combine his love of Siena with his passion for creative arts.
"Siena has provided me with so many personal growth opportunities over my four years that it felt right to come back and give back to them," said Lavera,
This mural titled "Global Siena" is the result of collaboration between the office of Student Activities and Leadership Development and the Center for International Programs that began in Spring 2014. The work of art is now the most recent improvement to Sarazen Student Union.
In the past year, the building has undergone vast structural improvements such as the newly renovated lounge, Casey's, and the upcoming patio addition called "The Paddock." It has transformed into hub for student activity and campus programs.
The office of Student Activities and Leadership Development and the Center for International Programs wanted to further the success of this space by showcasing the stories of many of the students who use it. The mural's wall will feature stories of students who have studied abroad and also profile international students studying at Siena. The background of a vibrant world map will serve as a reminder of the impact that the Siena community is leaving on the world.
"The project, expertly painted by wonderful artist Luke Lavera, not only adds a pleasing aesthetic to our student union but also gives students the opportunity to see what their peers are doing internationally. I think the mural reflects the growing global network that Siena has established through international advocacy, service, and study," said Jack Rogers '16.
The mural will also serve as a reminder of the important contribution that Lavera made to Siena's campus. "This is going to further my experience as an artist, but it's also a great opportunity to leave a mark on Siena," said Lavera.
