Student elections were held at the end of the fall semester. The results revealed a new batch of capable leaders with full agendas and clear goals for the New Year.
Newly elected Student Senate President Ryan Murphy ’14 hopes to improve the lives of as many students as possible. “As a Senate we work tirelessly for the students and do as much as we can to ensure we deliver for them,” Murphy said. “We will be a very active Senate this term and will ensure we can do the most good for the most students.”
Ballots were also cast for class officers and positions within Student Events Board, Residence Hall Association, Budget Allocation Committee and Commuter Life Council. This time around, former Senate Secretary Emily Curro ’13 posted updates and election results on Twitter.
Dina DeCarlo ’16 was elected Commuter Life Council President. DeCarlo believes her role centers around engaging commuter students to ensure that they feel involved on campus. “I want to show my peers that with hard work, dedication and a positive attitude, you can achieve all of your goals,” DeCarlo said.
Newly elected SEB Chairperson Stephen Jensen '14 wants to create innovative, creative and appealing events. “As Chairperson, you are constantly working for others,” Jensen said. “We [SEB] want to host programs and events that are diverse and respectful.”
Outgoing Senate President Cassandra Jane Werking ’13 looks forward to seeing the accomplishments of the incoming Senate administration. Werking’s Senate helped to secure free bus transportation for all students through a partnership with the Capital District Transportation Authority. The group also pushed for the construction of lockers for commuter students and encouraged voting in the presidential election. Werking said by including them in major decisions, the Senate formed a strong relationship with Siena administrators, including the College president and Board of Trustees chairman.
Many elected student leaders are involved in other aspects of campus life, such as Relay for Life, the Bonner Service Leaders Program and Students in Free Enterprise. These experiences contribute to their successful representation of the student body, which begins at the start of the spring semester.
