General Graduate School Financial Aid Tips

  • Look for career-specific scholarships (i.e. nursing, microbiology, etc.)
  • Don't only search for scholarships; check to see if grants are available.
  • Visit the website(s) of any honor societies to which you belong. Some offer scholarships.
  • Research scholarships through the specific colleges/universities to which you are applying.
  • Be sure to fill out your FAFSA!
  • After reviewing the financial aid package you receive from your grad school, consider negotiating with the school or talking with someone from the financial aid department on how you can apply for additional scholarships through the college. The article, "5 Steps to Getting More Money from your Graduate School” from U.S. News and World Reports has some good advice.
  • Look into fellowships or assistantships in which to participate at your graduate school in order to help lower your out of pocket costs. Also make sure to learn about your employer’s assistance when applying for Grad School. U.S. News and World Reports has some advice on the latter.
  • Check out this video from MSN Money. Much of the advice can be extrapolated for graduate school scholarships too.

Also, BEWARE of scholarship scams. Legitimate scholarships will not ask you for money, processing fees, etc. Never share your credit card or bank account information with any of these organizations. Given the high demand for scholarships, they are an easy target for identity thieves. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
