Spanish and French Language Placement Tests

Bonjour! ¡Hola! Ciao! And welcome to Siena College! Our goal is to empower you with the tools needed to succeed, serve, and lead in your future career and community. As part of that mission, we've created a language placement exam that provides an opportunity for you to get ahead. This fall, we’re offering language courses in American Sign Language, French, Greek, Italian, and Spanish.

Students in most majors can study a foreign language during their time at Siena if they would like to. Some majors, like American Studies, English, and History, require two semesters of a foreign language as a part of the major.

Please complete this language placement test if you have prior language experience in French or Spanish. The placement exam will help us determine the best courses and support for you.

Spanish Proficiency Test

If you would like to start learning a new language, please indicate which language you would like to study on the Fall Schedule Planning Form.

Here are some tips for taking the assessment:

  • Review ahead of time. You might be a little rusty on some aspects of the test and that’s okay. Refreshing your memory will help you prepare for the placement test and your classes.
  • Set aside 30 minutes of uninterrupted time.
  • Don't stress about the grade. The assessment is to provide you with the best support possible.
  • Take it yourself. Accurate results help us customize your classes and support.

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE

ASSESSMENT SURVEY

Welcome to the School of Science! Our goal is to empower you with everything you need to succeed and have the best possible experience here at Siena. As part of that mission, we use a placement exam called ALEKS PPL that helps match you to the right math courses and support.

It is really important to complete this placement process, because students who don’t complete the ALEKS assessment will be automatically placed into a Preparation for College Mathematics course. Be aware that placing into a lower-level math class than expected in your major plan could put you up to a year behind in other classes that depend on math prerequisites!

All incoming first-year and transfer School of Science students (except for nursing, health studies and environmental studies BA majors) must take ALEKS assessment, even if a calculus course was taken in high school.

Here’s how the process goes:

  • Review ahead of time. You might be a little rusty on some of the topics (listed below), and that’s okay. Refreshing your memory will help you prepare for the placement test and your classes.
  • Complete your first assessment before June 15. The test is taken online, proctored remotely using a lockdown browser and video recording. Set aside at least 90 minutes to take the exam, as it can’t be paused.
  • Use the ALEKS PPL personalized Learning Modules to improve your score. If you didn’t achieve the necessary score to place into your required course, don’t worry! ALEKS creates a customized practice program for you to bring your skills up to speed.
  • Take a second assessment by July 15th. After this deadline, your best score will be used to register you for the appropriate math class.
  • Continue working in the ALEKS PPL Learning Modules if you didn’t place into your goal course. You can take a third assessment by August 15th, and if you place higher, you may be able to adjust your schedule as availability allows!

Placement into courses higher than MATH 110 via AP credit can be achieved according to the following policy:

ALEKS score of 76 or higher + a score of 4 or higher on the AP Calculus AB exam: register for MATH 120 (Calculus II).
ALEKS score of 76 or higher + a score of 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam: register for MATH 210 (Calculus III).

If you need help, please reach out to us.

Here are some of the mathematical topics you will be tested on:

  • Whole numbers, fractions and decimals
  • Percents, proportions and geometry
  • Signed numbers, linear equations and inequalities
  • Lines and systems of linear equations
  • Relations and functions
  • Integer exponents and factoring
